Socialism refers to a broad array of doctrines or political movements that envisage a socio-economic system in which property and the distribution of wealth are subject to control by the community.
The more socialistic a country's economy, the less chance for an individual to become wealthy.
In communist countries like Cuba,
those in the top government positions often become wealthy. I think, the rest of the people do not achieve wealth.
That is the general rule, there may be exceptions of course.

In a socialist society, there is no need to get wealthy in economic terms (money, properties, etc.). Values, in these societies, are centered on human development, and wealthiness can be measured as the amount of good things that an individual provides to the entire society through his/her work and committment.
Individual economic richness is seen, in socialist societies, as an unfair advantage someone has vis-a-vis others. Al the richness produced has to be put at the service of the entire society and not only of one single individual and single individuals can accept that only trhough consciusness and understanding.

People are technically equal in socialism because the wealth of the country is distributed to many people unlike in capitalism when the wealth is limited to the rich and powerful people controlling businesses and government.

They're not supposed to. I don't know why anyone would want to live in a society that didn't encourage its citizens to be free.
