The sages give this example: If a man finds a few coins scattered on the road he may keep them and not be stealing them, but if he finds coins neatly stacked up on the road or in a sack it would be stealing. What do you think? (By the way, I am not saying I agree with the sages)

Well, you do have to go off circumstances. Your example: If a man finds a few coins scattered on the road he may keep them and not be stealing them, but if he finds coins neatly stacked up on the road or in a sack it would be stealing.
The man STILL found coins on the SIDE of the road, weather it was stacked on not, they were on the SIDE of the road, which is in CLEAR SIGHT.
Here is my example:
What if you found a diamond, so shiny it caught your eye, and it was on the side of an lonely road,.... it wouldnt be considered stealing becuz u found it and no one was near, not even a building. BUT if u found it in a commercial street where there are 40 different vendors,..... how can u tell WHICH vendor it belongs to?

If the money you've found, is in ANY way identifiable with a particular person, and you keep it, this IS stealing.
If it is found in a public place, and UN-identifiable with anyone, it is yours. Have no guilt about it.
If you wish, you can still go through the process of turning it in, but who is to say it will ever reach it's original owner?
If you are still undecided, hold on to it, and place an ad in the local paper, or on a bulletin board. Do NOT disclose the sum.
You will be over run by calls from every nut, trying to get free money, by trying to guess the right amount. It's almost NOT worth the time.

I've been the one who has lost money before, and just had to consider it a lesson learned. :)

It would all depend on the quantity that was found.. if you found a large roll of notes (or something of significant value) by the side of the road, I would had it into the police. If no one comes to claim them, then the police would return it too you, so its not stealing. Though if I was to find a small quantity of coins by the side of the road, I would keep them since it would be impossible to find their owner.

I don't know who the sages are, but if the money is on the road someone must not have wanted it. If it was in a sock it could have been lost, but how would you ever find the owner? You could post a ad asking someone to secribe the sock, but say the person was passing thru town and will never see that ad.......then I say finders/keepers.

i think when you find something near the person's stuff, or if it seems as if they purposely put it there (like when it's stacked) and you take it that would be stealing however if you see it dropped and you're sure you know who it belongs to then taking it would also be wrong and i would say is stealing. if there's no way to find the person who owns the things or if there's no lost and found, then it would be acceptable to keep it. hope this answers you question! =]

Sounds like George Washington asking a question. Didn't he walk a mile to find the owner of a lost nickle or was it he could not lie about chopping down the cherry tree?

If i chanced on a pound coin on the floor i could go searching, see if theres each and every physique who appeared like they could of dropped it and if not take it. If it grow to be like a £20 observe identity make a larger attempt. If it grow to be a wallet crammed with money or some thing else like an ipod identity hand it to the police or be certain i chanced on who it belonged to reckoning on the placement.

I think this has to do with intent. If truly there is no way to know who owns the item, then fine.

However, what I have taught my children is to turn the item in to whatever property owner where the item was found. School grounds, grocery store aisle, park....if no one claims in within a certain amount of time, then they can go back and claim it.

The intention is to return it. See?

If it's out in the open, and there doesn't seem to be anyone who it belongs to, and there's no one looking for it, then it's ok. But i always hand things in to lost and found, because that's what i would want someone to do with my things.

i believe one can only find something if it is lost and if something is lost on private domain finding it and taking it is stealing but if it is lost in public areas finders keepers
