I got my new goldfish on Saturday. I would just like to know what species it is. It looks like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/25/Common_goldfish.JPG

All goldfish are the same species, but they come in different varieties because they've been bred to look a certain way - just like collies, poodles, pugs, and grayhounds are all varieties of dogs (dog = species).

The one in the photo is a common, but there are some characteristics that may make yours a different variety. For instance, if it would have a long tail, it would be considered a comet, rather than a common.

Here's a link that will help you identify yours: http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/ftypes.html In most cases for the single-tailed varieties, the color isn't important, but shubunkins will show multiple colors. Keep this in mind when comparing photos and descriptions.

I'm sort of surprised that no one's mentioned this yet, but if you're looking for a binomial species name, it's Carassius auratus. They're a species in the carp and minnow family.

If you just wanted to find out that it's a common goldfish, though, well, it is, just like everyone else said.

Nice goldfish. I think it is a common goldfish, but I prefer to call it comet though, they only have slight different, but comet sounds much nicer since they both swim really fast. I have quite a few of them. U have to take good care of them though, very good care because they tend to get their tank dirty quite easily, so it is important to change your water often, like once or twice a week. They also catch diseases from dirty water quite easily. My goldfish scares me from time to time and I have to post up many questions about them. Well... goodluck with your new goldfish!

It's just like the picture name states: a common goldfish. It's one of the goldfish breeds, actually.
