I think you would like Patricia Cornwell's books. Most of them center around Dr. Kay Scarpetta. They are in a series and I love them.

J.A. Jance also writes wonderful books. She has a couple sets of series featuring different characters.

Patricia Cornwell's books are as suspenseful as James Patterson's. J. A. Jances are good but a little milder.

While I have stopped reading everything in a genre, and following series closely, I always liked the Jeffrey Deaver novels, and I also liked the Patricia Cornwell novels (the Kay Scarpetta ones, not the other ones).

Check out the Edgars. That's short for the Edgar Allan Poe Award, which is handed out in the spring each year by the Mystery Writers of America. It's pretty much the Pulitzer for mysteries, and I was introduced to a lot of new authors by going back and reading about who had won in previous years. Quite often, the winners are new writers, so you can get in on the ground floor, so to speak.

Also, if you have a local library, check out back issues of both Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine. Both feature short stories, but they run from the classic closed-room murder mysteries to pure suspense. I found a treasure trove of authors when I used to subscribe to those magazines, and most of the ones I liked are still writing now, but they are writing novels as well as short stories.

And if you have a local library, be sure to use that resource. Libraries vary from area to area, and I know I am lucky because our local county library, where I used to work, is one of the top rated library systems in the US, but they have all sorts of resources to help a reader find new authors. Most are online now (you need a library card to access the databases), but they also just have reading lists in the libraries, and they have referral services where you can put in names of authors you enjoy, and get a list of similar authors.

Finding new authors is a fun business. Good luck!

You are in luck ! There are many mystery writers out there.

Read the Mali Anderson mystery series written by Grace Edwards. They are written against a backdrop of Harlem, New York history.

Valerie Wilson Westley is a great mystery writer. I recommend anything by her. Her work is written against a backdrop of Newark, NJ images.

Yes, I have enjoyed James Patterson on many an occasion. But, there are also the original mystery writers ... Chester Himes and Arthur Conan Doyle.

Enjoy !

There's a great new mystery book if you don't mind that it takes place in the near future. I think it makes it more interesting. It's fun and funny, as well as a good mystery plot.
It's called Better Than Chocolate, and it's written by Bruce Golden
