I know FORTRAN IV now-a-days is obsolete; how can I get back into programming without having to learn C++ or VB and so on?

Get yourself the GCC suite from GNU, there is a version that is Windows compatible. GCC includes G77, which is a Fortran 77 compiler that is very good.

And it is shareware; some talented people make if available gratis.

I use it all the time.

There are some softwares and compilers that are used to write and run fortran codes. Some of them are free and can be easily downloaded from the internet. I used to program in fortran back in college... unfortunately, i forgot the name of the software i used..

I can see that you are interested in programming but dont want to deal with the complexities. There are many languages these days java and .net are very popular. Again programing is more web centric so you can try one of the scripting languages like PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby, Javascript. There are lots of IDEs(integrated development environments) for each of these. With the support of online forums, I'm sure you can get started. Best of luck

Start here. Use HTML to launch Javascript or VBScript. Then go from there.

C++ and Java are object oriented and may be completely foreign to your structured programming mind. That could be a reall challenge for the future.
