I'm looking for some good books to learn how to be more effective in "empathic understanding" or "verbal mirroring". Does anyone know of some books they could recommend for this?

Examples would be "So, what I hear you saying is......." or "It sounds like you are.....".

I actually don't know how to "verbally mirror" or "emphathetically understand"...so I'm actually looking for a book that cites examples or has samples of how it's done so I could mimic it until I get it down myself.

Thanks!

It sounds like you are interested in the more Humanistic approaches to therapy. Try searching on Humanistic and/or Existential therapy and you will find a large assortment of books on the types of practices you mentioned. Here is one possible source:

Books by Egan, Teyber, and others are classics and pretty good. If you search these in Amazon, it will give you related choices. Most of the basic books in the area are pretty decent. Getting good feedback on your performance can make a big difference in helping put the skills into action.

Try reading books written by Zig Ziggler. he was not a counselor but a great speaker and salesman and he speaks about reflective listening. You don't really need a book, though. Just practive repeating what others say. Watch a sitcom and practice.

The best one I have ever found is the Bible...it teaches more about several subjects on relationships than all the books I have read...hope it helps.
