once a cd-R is written with files ..even with few files..it's format cannot be changed.
A cd-R started as data cd would stay data cd although it can have many sessions... and same goes for an audio cd. (which is a single session disk in most cases).
you can make an empty CD-R into an audio CD.. software of your CD writer should give the option to either make it an audio cd or data cd.

Many cd authoring programs like Nero or Roxio will allow you to make a cd that has audio and data. You may not be able to play the music in a standard cd player if you choose this option. Some players will recognize the audio and ignore the other files. You should be able to access all the content on a PC and most likely a Mac as well.

You can keep both types of files on the same CD, however, don't try and play it!

Not directly. I.e., not on the same physical CD.
If you have iTunes, copy the music files off the CD, then us it (iTunes) to burn an audio CD.
If you don't have iTunes, search around -- there's lots of programs for each platform that can burn audio CDs.
