First, the fact that you believe you can do it is fantastic.

If you are just starting out, it really is as simple as enrolling in a class and acting in a play.

For classes, you can do academic or industry. Academic classes are part of a curriculum at a college or high school. They are taught by professors and/or associate instructors who many times have a lot of experience directing and acting.

Industry classes take place at theatre companies or studios. They are usually taught by industry professionals who are currently active in the professional acting world.

You should absolutely start with an acting class. If you love it, immediately take a Voice and Speech class, and a Movement class. That will free up your acting more than anything. Then your teachers, who will know your work by then, can guide you to your next class.

As for being in plays, if you are enrolled in an academic institution you can audition there. However, community theatre offers a wider variety of experience for you to learn from. There is usually not as much money there, which means they are not building your costume especially for you, but that's ok. The experience is the best thing.

Find audition listings in your local newspaper and online.

Well, atomic gave you quite an answer there. Okay, the first step is to get into classes or a play. Wherever you are there are places you can go to act. Once you get into it you'll find out more and more from friends and teachers. I don't know how old you are but there are community colleges that have acting classes. There has to be a local theatre or theatres where you live. Call them and ask about working or acting there. If you really want to you will. Nudge or no nudge. Good luck.

I would say to start off by joining a musical or play so you can get used to being on stage and acting in front of other people. If you already did this then i suggest you go 4 auditions or something 4 a TV show or helping in tv serials

I've heard of the AMDA academy in NYC, not only for the training but for the connections you get from being right there in NY. I definitely agree with the other guy that you gotta be careful; I was working on being a actress/singer before I realized that I am definitely not thick-skinned enough and couldn't make anybody I marry watch me pretend to be in love with someone else. I wouldn't want to see my husband doing it. It is very political and it is the business of opinions, not genuine qualifications. Just be prepared to suffer for a few years before anything really goes right for you.

I agree with the other answers as well--just get involved as much as possible with community theatre and learn those skills that make you more valuable as a performer--voice lessons, acrobatics, kung-fu, whatever. And just remember, develop a solid (good) opinion of yourself and stick to it. Never listen to "you're no good" but still be open to constructive criticism. Its a tough biz.

Thats great!
I think one of the best pieces of advice I can give, practically, is to make sure you have TIME. And the money to devote yourself to what you want. Theatre is tough, with a lot of deadlines; and no matter what age you are; you need to make sure you either have time with it for school; which case you might just go into theatre major or a drama club. Or with your job.

So, break a leg. Go into it and look, try, experience. When you're going into drama, you have to give it your all, and NOT be afraid of it.

well, maybe get some acting lessons in your town and ask anyone that is in the buisness what it is like and the to dos and don'ts . Maybe you could get advice and stuff like that. Also when you are old enough to really know that acting is your dream and you'll do anything to show the world that, move to LA. oh yeah then you'll be going places. GOOD LUCK! Hope to see your name in lights one day

My advice, from a child who has just started to do acting, is to go to acting classes! You may even get auditions from there. Auditions can also get help you get hired at an agency. We were lucky in that we are with an agency and they highly recommended acting classes, but my son got jobs before he even started. He is only five years old though.

It is the same thing with any job, do your homework and be prepared.

Just imagine what your life would be without making the choice of acting. It would make you miserable right?
I would feel the same so let's go out there and fake cry for a living!

You've got to smart small and work your way up. Try going to a few commercial auditions, or join a theatre group. Eventually, if you persevere, you will get somewhere acting!

Before you move to New York City, build your résumé. Perform in as many regional theatre productions as you can. casting directors and agents want to see the lead roles in which you performed.
