Keeping the car well-tuned, the tires properly inflated, and especially your driving habits affect your milage than anything else.
If you haven't already replaced them, now might be the right time to get new spark plugs and wires for a 5 year old car. The iridium-tipped plugs advertise better milage, but I don't know if that's true. However, if your plugs and wires are in good shape, then its probably a waste of money to change them now.
Remember, your probably going to need a new belt and shocks soon, so if your on a budget, save your money for those before you start trying to tweak the motor.

Insure that it is tuned up, check the tire pressure weekly (low pressure drops millage) anticipate stops, easy acceleration, do not sit in one place and idle for long periods of time. Switch to a synthetic oil. Every few tanks put in some STP gas additive.
