I've read and tried many things...I have had the same problem.
Some other things not mentioned:
1. Remove mirrors from the bedroom. They are too stimulating.
2. Go to bed the same time every night (that's a hard one!)
3. Try to resolve any issues that are on your mind that could be plaguing you. (That is difficult...I try to be philosophical and realize that I cannot do anything right now. That doesn't always work, though.)
4. Read something really boring.
5. Listen to soothing music.
6. Relaxation 'exercises'. I hear there are some good tapes or DVDs. I have one I was given to listen to before and after surgery, it put me right to sleep!

Not without seeing a doctor as they can have side effects. Take your sister to the doctor and have some tests done and try and find the cause. There are sleep clinics that might help her. Sleeping pills may be a option but should be supervised.

Try my style. Whenever I don't get sleep then I listen to soft and soothing music. With the music and I try to think of good things and makes me sleepy and get to sleep thereafter. You could laugh but it's a fact. But it will take some time for you to get your sleep back in this process.

1. Avoid things that make it difficult to fall asleep. Like coffee or sweets close to bedtime, or sleeping too much during the day.

2. Try to make your bedroom as conducive to sleep as possible. Don't bring stressors like work, etc. to your bed.

3. Try to set a regular time for sleep.

4. A lot of other stuff like relaxation techniques, milk, herbal teas, and even counting sheep will work. You just have to find what works for you.

Actually they say taking calcium pills before bed can help you sleep. I've also read that its bad to just toss and turn in bed. its better to get up and read or be creative and draw or something like that. Staying in bed tossing and turning can make you more stressed out and make it harder to fall asleep. Also, if you have a TV in your bedroom that can actually make it harder to fall asleep becuase you are distracted.

There is a nutural herb used for centuries, made from the root of the valerian plant, and has chemical naturally occuring sedative properties, although mild, it helps relax you into a more restfull enviornment-sleep. available at any drug store over the counter, in pill or capsule, form, the smell is quite pungent, cats go nuts over it, but i hope this helps you!

Ditto on the melatonin. I take 1 mg, and it works like a charm. It's not habit forming, and completely natural.
