Then how can you justify keeping Fred McGriff out?

If McGriff had hit seven more Homeruns he would be a shoe-in. However in this time of inflated stats that might keep him out.

As for comparing him with the other 4, only Perez gives you an argument. The main reason, hardware. Both McGriff and Perez never won MVP, Rookie of the Year, Batting Title or Homerun Title. Williams won ROY in 1961 and Batting title in
1972 and remember he played Outfield most of his career so to put him in a list of first basemen is not right. Cepeda was ROY is 1958 and MVP 1967 plus was Homerun Champ in 1961. Stargell was MVP 1979 plus NLCS and WS MVP that year and was homerun champ in 1971 and 1973.

In total I think and believe McGriff will get in when his time comes up. But, the pure numbers have changed the selection, Look at players like Harold Baines and Jim Rice, they may never get in. Plus don't get me started on Goose Gossage.

UPDATE Hey George B get you numbers straight Stargell did not hit 500+ in fact he hit less then McGriff

ohhh come on fred mcgriff cant compare to those guys, perez was an rbi machine in the big red machines hey dey which included 2 world championships and another appearance, willie stargell hit 500+ hrs and was hte leader of the pirates that won 2 world championships, orlando cepeda was a 5 tool player and played for giants with mays and mccovey and won a world series with the cards, and billy williams was a sweet swinger and outfielder on the cubbies. anyone who saw those guys would tell you fred mcgriff wasnt in their class, fred mcgriff a good player but not hall material.

Well, it hasnt been 5 years since he retired, so Fred is not eligible to be on the HOF ballot this yet. He will be eligible in 2 more years or so.

I think McGriff will get his chance at the HOF and he should be in. He has good offensive and defensive numbers. He is a good fielder. He has always had a pretty good fielding percentage through out his career. Crime dog has won the silver slugger award 3 times, twice in the NL and once in the AL. He won the NL award back to back. He is also a 5 time all star and a all star MVP in 1994.

Just because some questionable guys get in, doesn't mean every fringe guy can get in. Two wrongs don't make a right??
There are some good guys that haven't made it.
Jim Rice had amazing numbers and was very dominant in his day. Not real friendly with the media. That's hurt him. He also didn't hang at the end for a longer career.

McGriff's numbers are great. They are less impressive due to the era he played in. 300 homers used to be a big deal. Now, every guy with a needle in his *** hits a bunch of homers.

The game will never be seen the same because of all the swollen heads. And you never know who REALLY did. Unless they admit it or get caught.

Remember:
"I'm not here to discuss the past......" - M. McGwire

To be eligible for the HOF you have to have been retired for five years. Since he put up some excellent statistics (493 HRs, 1550 RBIs) during his career, he will have a shot of making it someday. I honestly don't think he will get in during the first couple of years he will be eligible though. His lifetime average, total hits, total bases and slugging percentage were not with the elite players in the Hall.

He's good and I would'nt mind seeing him make it but he is no Stargell or Cepeda!! better than williams and perez is close. But he was no pop or bull.

Who's justifying that? Not me, man.
He'll have to wait for the Vet's Committee, which will take a while, but I think he can be squeezed in there somehow. I wouldn't mind one bit if he was in the HOF. More power to him. . . .

Hey, not me. I'd vote for the Crime Dog, as long as that wretched nickname (the only Bermanism that ever caught on widely) is kept off his plaque.
