well, i'd have to say the best band ever is different from my favorite band ever.
so as for best, i would have to go with either the (later era) beatles or black sabbath.

Led Zeppelin, i mean you could say beatles were the best but they weren't rock,
Led zeppelin defined and broke boundaries with their music, if you would listened to a single called "Communication breakdown" on their first album ,it had had all the characteristics of a metal or a punk song. I mean could you imagine that kind of music back in 1968. NO !!!
They have influenced countless bands The list goes on like
1.Queen
2.Aerosmith
3.ACDC
4.Black Sabbath
5.Judas Priest
6.Nirvana
7.Metallica
8.Megadeth
9.Van halen
10.U2
11.Iron maiden
12.Slayer
it goes on and on and on!!!!!
They have insipired me !! and a countless legion of fans.
They were true to their music , when the drummer died they chose to disband rather than go on b'cos he was an integral part of their sound.

I can choose, but I can only choose for right now. It'll probably change within a couple of days. :-/
Right now, I love The Who. They're spectacular in every way. Roger Daltrey was a god, Keith Moon was a reckless pioneer on his "sloppy drums", Pete Townshend is just incredible, and John Entwhistle is the best bassist ever to live.
