how can i tell the engine size by vin num 1992 4 cyl gas pickup

Look in your Chilton's, Motor Age or Haynes manual for that truck. There is a section in the front that tells you how to decipher a VIN. Or - just place a call to your local auto parts store and they can do the cross reference for you.

The 8th number or letter of your VIN number would tell someone at a parts store like Advance Auto Parts what engine came originally in that pickup. However, being that it is a 92, and a pickup. It might be a different engine. If that is the case, you will need the number off of the block and will need to tell a salvage yard or a reputable car dealer the block number and hopefully they will have a book.

easiest and cheapest way is to visit your local parts store and take the vin number with you. on most cars, it will be the 8th number or digit in the vin number that will designate the engine size. they can look it up in their engine parts books or usually on the computer systems they now use. other than that, buy a manual for your particular vehicle. it should have vin number interpretation in it.
