I lost a best friend to cancer when I was in my 20's. It made me realize that you can't take life for granted. My best friend in high school also lost her mom to cancer when we were in 8th grade, and it also helped me realize that life can be unfair.

definitely, my friend wasn't even dying, but she's diabetic... that changed my perception of disease totally... i was more health conscious (only for a while... hehe)
