You can forgive anyone at anytime in your life or theirs. But why wait till they are dead, they need to hear it when they are living. I made mistakes with my mom and she died before we could make up. I talk to her all the time and believe she forgave me, but a day doesn't go by I don't hate myself for letting her think I didn't care about her. I miss her so much. If someone did you wrong, be big about it and say you forgive them. We all want to get to heaven one day don't we?

Depends on how you view the afterlife. Personally, I believe in Heaven and Hell. Those who go to Heaven, can and do hear us.
Also, it's better for your conscience, but only if you mean it. Don't forgive someone just because you feel sorry that they died. Forgive them because you want to and they deserve it.
And....take this as a life lesson. If you wait too long to tell someone "I'm sorry", or " I love you"....you may not get the chace to do it.

Forgiveness is more for you than for the other person. If you hold on to the anger or resentment is only harms your well being. Just know that everyone makes mistakes and let it go. You will feel better and that is all that matters at this point.
And yes, I think they somehow know.

It is impossible to know whether or not they know you have forgiven them, but you will know, and in the forgiving you have given yourself a gift, you can get on with the rest of your life without the baggage of hanging onto whatever it was.

forgiving is not for the person you are forgiving it is for you, it helps you move on, you can tell the person you are forgiving but don't need to ,and yes you can forgive someone that has died.

For me, no. I had my childhood destroyed & still carry the mental & physical scares. The one that did this has been dead for many years & I still feel angry. I feel deprived of being able to confront this person because they died. The unresolved issues continue to bother me. Spare me the " you have to let it go or bla bla bla " It isn't ruining my life, just is in the back of my mind at times.

Yes. If not for anyone else than for yourself to be able to let it go.

yes. forgiveness is a two way street. It's not just for them, it's for you. I dunno if they would know or not, doesn't really matter. They would care though.
