Avira doesn't slow down? Wow, in my experience it was slowing down. I had it on my other laptop for a few weeks and it slowed down my laptop so much that I often had to wait 10 minutes for my laptop to get it to respond again. It froze all the time, very annoying. RIGHT AFTER I deleted Avira, the speed went back to normal again. I really need to find a program that doesn't slow down my laptop so much. I'm using McAfee at the moment, and that's also slowing down my laptop, but not as much as Avira, that was really a disaster. I see a lot of people suggest AVG and Kaspersky, I might try that.

The one I have been using for years is AVG from grisoft.com. I was reading the old virus myths page, Rob Rosenberger mentioned this was a good one and it is still free to this day. It auto updates and I find it catches virus's that Norton and Mcafee both regularly miss. It does not slow my system at all and has regular basic scheduled scans available, though I tend to perform my own complete scans at my choosing so I don't allow it to run the scheduled one. I use it on my desktops and my laptops. I have compared its functionality against Housecall and it seems better than that too. housecall.trendmicro.com if you want to try that. My company computer has to run Norton and it slows the computer greatly, I had to shut down some of the Norton services from Windows to make the that laptop run smoother.

NO matter what you have been told NORTON is not, now the best anti-virus program.

In fact it is NOT even compatible with the new operating system called VISTA. And, if you want to contact Norton you will be very lucky to get an answer. Just ask your local computer professionals and I am sure they will agree.

Kapersky is known as the best but costs $40 and YOU ASKED for a FREE anti-virus.

So here it is, used by nearly all of us in ANSWERS :

It is AVG and you get by logging on to :

www,grisoft.com

It is so good. And it automatically updates itself every few days, It is FREE as well. Everyone in our computer club (600 members) uses AVG. Most of us have dropped Norton except to use their Utilities program, But even that has been surpassed by a better FREE one called :

EASY CLEANER

you get it by logging in to:

http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm

It was invented and made world FREE by a Finland expert but it has also been stolen and is sold by others who TRY to sell it . This is illegal but there is no way to prevent it since the robbers live in some country offshore and are untouchable. So be careful and get the free one with the site I have given you.

It will clean all you files including REGISTRY. Just hit "FIND" and then wait for " detected all, shall we remove all" say YES.

well i dont know of any really good free ones but I would highly recommend Kaspersky antivirus its about $40 and I use it on both my laptop and desktop and havent had any viruses since. it has special features for laptops so it wont slow them down or eat up the battery and i think you can download a free demo to see if you like it. also when the trial runs out you could just google "kaspersky serial" and get it activated for free

The two I recommend are either AVG free (totally free forever) or CA Antivirus (free on 90 day trial). Links to either product, along with other SAFE COMPUTING recommendations at our website below!

Also, another free product from GRISOFT (at the AVG link) is a free ROOTKIT antivirus tool. This will scan for specific rootkit viruses and offer removal if infected.

Check them out!

I use Trend PCCillin. on my laptop and it doesn't cause any slow down. Even when it's scanning.

Oops! I didn't read the question properly. Trend isn't free, but it works well.
