It may have been sung by the Hollies but Neil Diamond made a hit out of it. I'm sorry I don't know who the song writer was but I'm sure it due to a handicapped brother.

I can't give you details but it's my impression that it was inspired by the bible, in that the christian faith says we are all brothers and should support one another.
