It's called the "batter's eye" -- a section of solid color designed to contrast with the baseball and give the batter a better chance of seeing the ball from the pitcher than if the section was crowded with fans wearing all sorts of colors.
Fenway sometimes does not sell the center field section for the same reason. Rangers Ballpark has a grassy hill.

It's called a 'batter's eye' and most, if not all, parks have them to comply with MLB rules. The intent is to create an area behind that contrats with the pitcher and the ball so the batter can get a better look at the release point of the pitch. It's a lot easier to see a baseball coming at you against a black background than it is to see one against a bunch of t-shirts.
Some older parks, built before the rule, have seats in that area that are covered. Sometimes, MLB lets them sell those seats, for example in the playoffs, so the irony is that when the games count the most, the batter's vision is compromised.

Fenways is actually a little different. Because it wa built before the rule they dont have a batters eye. But during day games they close off a section of the bleachers and cover it with a black tarp. During night games however fans are allowed to sit there.

That is simply a backdrop so the batters can see the pitches better as they are released. If fans and their multi-colored clothing were allowed to sit in that area, it would be extremely difficult to see the ball. There would be more hitters plunked by baseballs, more passed balls, and in general a much poorer quality of the game you see today because the baseball would blend in too much.
Take it from someone who has has played both with and without a backdrop: the difference is night and day!

Every ballpark has that, although it may not be black.
It's called the batters eye. It's simply a section of the stands opposite the plate that is covered in a single, dark colour of something. The dark solid background gives the hitter a better chance of picking up the ball as it leaves the pitcher's hand.

it's black and has no seats for the batters because when they are staring down the pitcher that is in the background so it's easier to pick up the ball.
