It was West Virginia.....Although they technically did not secede from the confederacy. They seceded from Virginia. They did not think the Confederacy was legitimate so they set up their own government of Virgina. Then the people who lived in the western part of the state called a constitutional convention to consider becoming there own state. The state which was originally going to be called Kanawha petitioned the US congress for statehood and it became a separate state in 1863.

I'm not aware of any Confederate state that rejoined the Union, however when Virginia seceded, the North Western portion of the state opted to remain in the Union and split the state that created the state of West Virginia. Also, Missouri, and Kentucky both southern states seceded, but never actually join the Confederate States of America. The link below provides an interactive time-line of events:

According to my social studies textbook, no Confederate State seceded and rejoined the Union. However, parts of West Virginia and Virginia were not loyal to the Confederate states and helped the Union during the civil war. They were also two of the first states to rejoin the Union after the Civil War

I'm wondering if you are thinking of West Virginia; although it wasn't really a state that seceded. When Virginia seceded from the Union the inhabitants of the mountainous area of that state did not agree; so they seceded from Virginia and petitioned the federal government to be allowed to join the Union as a state separate from Virginia. The federal legislature approved this and the state of West Virginia was born.

There was actually some debate about this. The more radical members of Congress believed in the idea of "state suicide". That by seceding, the states had effectively rendered themselves non existent and thus any conditions the victors wanted could be opposed on their readmission (at least one person floated the idea of completely redrawing the map of the South and creating wholly new states). Ironically this idea would retroactively recognize the fact, if not the legality, of secession. Moderates like Lincoln argued that the states had never left and so should be brought back into the union relatively quickly with efforts made to render the possibility of secession moot.

West Virginia was not a state before secession, but it refused to go along with Virginia when it seceded and formed a state that sided with the Union.
