An army flack jacket. They don't have any metal buttons on the front so they won't scratch your tank. They use velcro and have lots of pockets. You can wear jackets under them or just a t-shirt. They are short and do not interfere with a sport-riding position. They are kevlar throughout and accept trauma plates; they protect you like you would not believe. They absorb incredible amounts of impact. They are bulletproof in case you get shot at. If you get in a fight at a bar, you are inpenetrable. You look cool and people think you are a vet. I wear one. I love it.
A friend and I used to put on gloves, flack jackets, and helmets and try to beat the hell out of each other. No one ever got hurt! It's fun!

Well, the perception of wearing leather for motorcycle riding is simply this. Should you take a spill (and most people do) while riding at a goood forceful speed, the leather will give you better protection than some other soft material. Leather is tougher material. And, it's a great wind breaker. And, a good solid helmet is great too. You see without it, you would definitely see a bright light should your head hit pavement. I have even seen some wearing leather during the Summer months. Now, I will say this... it depends on your preference. However, it's better to safe than sorry. Give it some thought, and make a concisive and concerted choice.
Happy Hunting
Good Luck in your buy

You can check out any bike shop for a textile jacket or mesh jacket. They make riding pants out of the same gear. If price is an issue check out "First Gear" brand (around $100) or "Tourmaster" brand ($100+). Joe Rocket makes a great jacket but are a little more expensive. I have 1 of each and they all do there job well. At the top of the list is Aerostitch but they are very expensive. Try it on at the store and then hit up a site called newenough.com for last years model at a big savings. Good luck
