If you are more than 36 weeks, I would say call your Dr.
Nothing relieves the contractions/pains?
Getting up, moving around, laying down?
Have you lost your mucous plug?
Contractions can hurt in both places, mainly near uterus'bottom & feel like strong period cramps or mild ones when they begin.
If the baby is positioned a certain way, your back could very well be getting all the pressure from the contractions.
The links below confirm this:
Congrats on your baby!

i didn;t have one contraction in my stomach the whole process with my son. I felt everything in my back. Yes. it could be labor. Go to the hospital. If its not then they just let you go back home. Its okay for it to be false labor so don;t be afraid of that cause I was and didn't go to the hospital until my mom made me and it was real labor. GO!!!! Good Luck!

Back labor is quite common. Time them and see how far apart they are. My daughter had mostly back labor with her first son. If you are in labor, either call your OB or get someone to take you to the ER. Congratulations on becoming a new Mommy!
