The obvious answer is the T-206 tobacco card of Honus Wagner. Legend has it that Wagner was upset about his cards being including in packs of cigarettes (as they were back then) and he demanded that his cards be pulled and/or destroyed as he didn't want to be assoicated with tobacco products. So many of them were pulled and destroyed, but some (approx. 500-1000) survived, and that is the benchmark card of the hobby. A great irony is that there is a card later on of Wagner that shows him dipping into a bag of tobacco! Of course many scarce cards of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and others can fetch a lot of bank also. But Wagner cards have brought anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million.

You have the T-206 Honus Wagner, 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig, and a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle.

The legendary Wagner card is probably never going to be knocked from the top, most valuable spot.

Among active players, certain cards of Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Clemens, Bonds (yes), and other Hall-bound superstars command attention among names well known. Hot rookies can burst upon the scene at any moment as well.

Honus Wagner. Or do you mean on average who's card is more valuable instead of the single card?
