The first National Association game was played on 04-May-1871 between the visiting Cleveland Forest Cities and the home Ft. Wayne Kekiongas.

Kekiongas pitcher Bobby Mathews served to Forest Cities catcher (and leadoff hitter; when was the last time a C led off? Kendall?) Deacon White, who doubled. White had two of Cleveland's four hits as Ft. Wayne prevailed, 2-0.

Game time: 2:00.
Attendance: 200.

Perhaps not what you were looking for, but interesting nonetheless.

The first player to make history would be the first batter or pitcher in the first game of the 1876 National League season, the first "Major League." If he got a hit, he had a 1.000 batting average. If the pitcher got the guy out, he'd have the lowest ERA and WHIP.

In what way? Wouldn't the first baseball team itself have made history? Why single out any given position?
