Hello people, i was just wondering
I have 512mb of ddr2 at 533Mhz, and i was planning to upgrade it. I have 2 options, keep the 512 and add 2gb of ddr2 same speed, or dump the 512 and buy 2gb ddr2 at 800Mhz. What is the best option?

before upgrading your memory speed it is best to consult the motherboard manual first and check what is the maximum memory speed it can support, bcoz if you buy 800MHz but you MB supports only 533MHz, your 800 will run only as fast as a 533 which be a waste of money. Check your motherboard first.

Now supposing that your motherboard can support 800MHz, I suggest the first option, 2.5G of memory at 533MHz is better than 2G of 800MHz, The speed of the memory is negligible compared to the amount of memory space your computer can have to perform more commands/programs at the same time.

Unless you can persuade your memory bus to run at 800 MHz instead of 533 MHz then the faster memory will just run at 533 MHz and it will gain you nothing.

If you plan to upgrade your CPU/motherboard some time soon then getting 800 MHz now will save having to ditch 2 GB of 533 MHz.

If you are not planning to upgrade soon then your next motherboard may well use DDR3 or whatever the next step is, so you will scrap 2 GB of more expensive memory anyway.

dump the 512 and add the 2gb
the speed increase will be awesome
just make sure your motherboard supports 800MHz RAM, or it will run at the fastest speed the board can support

How many slots do you have? most mobos are 2-4 slots, i suggest buy another stick of 512 to make 1gb in dual channel mode or buy 3 sticks to get 2gb.

dump the 512MB DDR2, and get the 2GB at the same speed...cuz u arent supposed to mismatch memory sizes larger than 1GB. for example 512MB and 2GB (2048) shouldnt be put in the same board.
