Are you SURE it's "slipping"? What exactly is the car doing, to give you any indication it's slipping? Is the "yellow wrench" light, or "check engine" light illuminating? If you are the original owner of this car, you should be well aware that your car does NOT have an automatic transmission. It is equipped with what is called a CVT (continuously variable transmission). This type of transmission does NOT upshift or downshift. It simply works on a similar principle to the way a snowmobile drive setup works. What was the colour of the transmission fluid when you checked it? It SHOULD be a dark bluish-greenish colour, similar to two-stroke engine oil in appearance. It should NOT be red or pink, the way conventional automatic transmission fluids appear. Also, HOW did you check the fluid level and condition? Ford deliberately made the dipstick very difficult to access on this particular model to discourage top ups of the wrong fluid by "Joe's Garages". If there is so much as ONE teaspoon of the incorrect fluid added, transmission failure WILL result!!! My suggestion is to take it into your Ford dealer to have it looked at, even if the warranty has expired. This car's transmission SHOULD NOT be "touched" by anyone not familiar with it. Hope this helps.

RE:
2005 Ford 500 transmission is slipping. Is this common? Any known causes?
My 500's transmission is slipping. It mainly does it when slowing down to fast, or trying to take off or pass to fast. But, it also does it other times too. It has transmission fluid in it, and it is good and clean. The car only has 43,000 miles on it. Of course it does it after the 36,000...

Hi David-
You don't mention wether your FiveHundred is FWD or AWD.
These 2 use completely different transmissions.
The AWD version has a CVT as Fordgirl mentioned.:
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) (CFT30)
The CVT is standard on Five Hundred SE and on SEL and Limited with AWD and standard on all Freestyle models.
Major features and benefits:
By using variable input and output pulleys, connected by a chain loop, to vary gear ratios to meet specific driving conditions, CVT is able to provide outstanding performance and efficiency
By entirely eliminating gears, CVT can offer an infinite number of gear ratios between its highest and lowest gear, contributing to fuel economy and performance
Since CVT has no gears, shifting is smooth with no upshift or downshift jerk. There are also fewer moving parts
CVT has two key advantages over a conventional 4-speed step transmission — improved fuel economy and enhanced performance
********************************
The FWD (except for some SE trim levels) uses a 6 speed automatic that has some different attributes:
6-Speed Automatic Transmission (F21)
The 6-speed automatic transmission is standard on front-wheel-drive versions of Five Hundred SEL and Limited.
Major features and benefits:
The 6-speed automatic transmission has a wide ratio span that provides torque on demand for quick acceleration in low gear situations
The electronically controlled 6-speed "learns" drivers' patterns and adapts shift points to optimize engine performance or fuel economy
In its "low" range, the transmission controller enables engine braking to help with hill descents or other demands
The 6-speed transmission is low maintenance with its fluid rated to last 10 years or 150,000 miles before a change is needed
I think yours may be a FWD & what you may be experiencing could be normal.
If you are still worried about this 'slipping' feeling after reading this.....please take it to a Ford Service Center for diagnosis

what i suggest is you take it to a transmission shop and let them test drive it,it might be something right now that they can correct,i have heard of a few of those giving problems ,but its usually minor things, like not shifting right or hesitating to go in gear, and most of that can be corrected with a good fluid and filter change, but have it checked,if there's a simple fix for it a transmission shop will know about it,good luck with it.
