I know nothing of Gregory Maguire.
Hunt for Red October is great!! It is loosely based on a real occurance, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storozhevoy ). Tom Clancy could not find a publisher for it at first, but he got it published by the U.S. Naval Institute Press—the first fictional work they ever published, and it made his career. It is very accurate in its technical details, but a bit dated now. (It was written in 1984).
If you like Hunt for Red October you will like other Clancy books. Red Storm Rising is my favorite Clancy book, because you don't know how it will come out in the end. I gave up on him after reading Clear and Present Danger...Clancy's appeal is that he is very accurate in his details (this is why his books are very popular with the military) but by the time Clear and Present Danger comes along it wasn't believable anymore.
Killer Angels is also popular, if you like Hunt for Red October you will likely like this too. It is the Battle of Gettysburg, as told through the eyes of the men that fought there.
THAT HIDEOUS STRENGTH by C.S. Lewis is excellent, it is my favorite book by him. (Though I like The Great Divorce too).
Jack London is well worth reading, so is Uncle Tom's Cabin if you can find a copy. It is quite un P.C. now, but it helped start the Civil War (how many books can say that?) and is a very exciting read.
Good luck

Your a. book, HforRO, is one of my all time favorite books. I loved the characters and the story. Some of my other suggestions for good, entertaining summertime, by the pool reads would include anything written by Jonathan Kellerman, Dean Koontz, or Lisa Scottoline. BTW, having a job where I could read by a pool sounds like a dream come true!

Try to read the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. This is a series starting with Interview With a Vampire. Harry Potter is always good, and Lord of the Rings. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson would be good. Pet Semetary by Stephen King is long, but good.

Well i have never read the Hunt For Red October or Son Of a Witch...but, if your into reading more i would say "dramatic" books, also about love, Lurlene McDaniel books are really good. She basically writes stories about teenagers who are faced with difficulties like diseases. But it is really hard to explain. You have to read them. I would say that some of the really good books by her are Too Young to Die, Angel of Hope+Angel of Mercy(sequels), and Baby Alicia is Dieing. Really all of her books are great, and i don't think you'll be disappointed. The books by her are really the only books i read.

I am assuming you read Wicked (Son of a Witch is the sequel) but I also loved the Ugly Stepsister by him. It was fabulous. I just finished the thirteenth letter it was really good as well. And finally, I started reading the James Bond books by Ian Fleming, I can hardly put them down!
Have a great summer!

Make it a point to go to bookstores and libraries and look for titles that simply get your attention and then review a few pages and decide for yourself. I enjoyed "The Hunt for Red October", but others didn't. I like biographies of military men and Presidents, but that's boring as helll to many. I've become bored stiff of most fiction material since it follows such a predictable pattern. YOU choose. YOU search for what gets YOUR attention, and then YOU'LL enjoy material that others may not have read, and YOU'LL be more interesting a person to meet and talk to. Read some material that others may have read, and others that others have not. You'll enhance your stature among friends and co-workers tremendously that way. God Bless YOU.

If you're a teen and into video games I think you might like my new YA novel GAMEPLAYER: The Genesis Portal. It's available at the normal online sites like amazon, B&N, Borders or you can check it further on my site www.myspace.com/gameplayerbook.
Just a suggestion
