Every country has different court of laws. If you were handed personally a subpoena from an officer to appear in court, you are really bound to appear in court. But if you did not personally receive that subpoena, you may or may not appear to them. The court hearings will proceed even without your appearance. But in a case where it is a criminal offense, they will hunt you wherever your hideouts are! The more penalties you will receive then. Since you got this matter, better to consult a lawyer to act this situation in favor of you.
*You did not specify the case where you are involved about the subpoena, so I cannot elaborate you well on what to do, except just to say, have a lawyer to protect you.

You can be declared in contempt of court by not appearing in court due to a subpoena. A subpoena is "a command to appear at a certain time and place to give testimony upon a certain matter." The term is from the Middle English suppena and the Latin phrase sub poena meaning "under penalty." The term may also be spelled "subpena".

If you have already been served the subpoena, you're out of luck. Not showing up will get you a contempt of court charge and that is the worst kind. They can put you in jail for however long it takes you to give them what they want. You'd have to go now if you accepted the piece of paper when the officer came with it. If you have never taken the piece of paper then you can get away with not going.

If they found you and you don't want to be involved, find a lawyer to prepare a Motion to Quash the subpoena. You have to have a darn good reason though, like it would endanger your life, or you have nothing relevant to testify for in this matter, or something along one of those lines.
