LCD or CRT is the best for a designer?

I using a CRT - but want to replace by an LCD 17" - Could i do that? if yes, which one is the best? Thanks so much!

What are you designing? Many graphic artists, architects, etc. prefer CRTs because they can display at different resolutions natively, whereas LCDs must manipulate the image digitally to use a different fullscreen resolution (which reduces image quality). Also, if you are very picky, you will notice that on dark images, the screen is never lit completely evenly from behind on an LCD monitor, while the lighting is always even and accurate on a CRT. If you want an LCD, Apple (strangely enough) actually makes VERY nice LCD monitors, but they are on the pricey side.

Edit: also, make sure the LCD you get supports whatever output your video card has. If your video card has DVI, you are fine, as there are adapters to Analog. If you have only Analog output from your video card, make sure you get an LCD monitor that supports it.

Get an LCD that is TCO'03 certified.

LCDs have problems with the range of colours they can reproduce. Also making sure that grays are the same colour as white, rather than tinged with some hue.

TCO'03 has specification requirements for these parameters so TCO'03 monitors will be better in these area than non TCO'03.


For colour reproduction, gray scale tracking and contrast ratio CRTs will almost always beat an LCD.

For geometry and brightness an LCD will almost always beat a CRT.

You want a CRT for anything that requires graphics designing.

If you are just doing normal home use or other non-graphics oriented work than a LCD is better for you.

For designing and graphics, CRT is the best.
For home using, LCD is more elegant.

LCD... it's more convenient and light..
use LCD 19" for better view...
the price, i think there are not much different than 17" LCD
