any hormone isn't good to take over a long period if your body should be normally producing it all the time. when you take a hormone supplement your body will not need to make as much and can, over time, cease to return back to normal levels if you stop taking the supplement. After 30 your melatonin levels gradually begin to drop anyways so it would be okay to take it if you are over 30. you should start with the lowest dose though and increase as needed. The thing too with sleep is that you don't want a band-aid approach....you want to heal the problem that is causing you to not sleep. Is it because of depression, anxiety, low hormone levels, poor sleep hygene, too much light getting in your room, other health issues, side effect of another medication. You should consult your doctor and then only use the melatonin for those nights that you just can't get to sleep no matter what.

I take 9 mg at bedtime. I checked and it is safe at much higher doses than that. You are fine.

It has not evidence of long term side effects so sleep away. Most conventional doctors prescribe it for ADHD children so its safe.
