Italy was defeated by September 1943 and their soldiers were instructed to lay down their arms. Mussolini went into hiding and was eventually hung by Italian partisans.
The new government was anti-fascist and supported the Allies.
Only one reason the Soviet Union entered WW2 - it was attacked by Germany.
Soviet Union - June 1941 Invasion by Germany - The Siege of Leningrad 1941 to 1944 - the Battle of Moscow December 1941 - The Battle of Stalingrad February 1943 - The Battle of Berlin April 1945

Italy switched sides when they were defeated during the North African campaign although they didn't so much switch sides as just stopped fighting as a nation. I don't think the Italian peoples hearts were ever in the fight. Since the Germans had occupied Italy it still had to be fought for from Sicily up.
Now the Soviet Union entered the war when they were attacked and invaded by the Germans in 1941. I'm not sure that any other reasons need be given beyond that.
Five major Soviet WW2 events huh,,,okay, I'll say the German invasion of the Soviet Union, the siege of Leningrad, the Battle for Stalingrad, the Battle of Kursk and the fall of Berlin.
By the by, I don't know what alternate universe Matt R is getting his information from but I would avoid using any of his "facts" on any test unless you have a strong desire to repeat the class.

- - - - Italy had been on the Allied Side during World War One. Prior to World War Two, Italy under the guidance of Benito Mussolini forged an alliance with Nazi Germany and went willingly to War with the World. When Italy was Invaded by Allied Forces in 1943, Mussolini was ousted and the Italians sued for peace with the Allies but Italy hardly contributed to the Allied cause and her status was unclear.
The Soviet Union was attacked, they had no say in the matter, German armies rolled aross her borders and that was that. No five reasons just one but why the war happended were, A) Failure of Soviet Diplomacy, B) Failure of Soviet Intelligence, C) Hitler's stupid blind obsession for greatness.
Five Major Events // 1) Germany's Initial Attack, 2) The First Winter 41 in to 42, 3) America's Entry into War due to Japan's Blunder, 4) Soviet Union Prudently NOT declaring War Against Japan, 5) the Siege of Lenningrad.
Peace....

Italy switched sides because of an agreement with the United States. The US and Allies took over Italy from Mussolini during the fall of 1943 or 1944. When it was liberated, Italy created a new government and a stipulation of the new government was that Allied troops would remain and that it would become an Allied country so that operations could be launched from there against the Germans. I.E. Operation Barbarossa, etc.
The Soviet Union entered the war because of a neutrality pact with Germany. They signed the self-proclaimed Warsaw Pact before the war that said that Germany would control Europe on the western side and Russia on the Eastern Side once the war started in Europe. However, Germany got over eager and invaded Poland, and then Russia realized that Germany was getting a little too close and declared war on Germany and broke the agreement of the Warsaw Pact.
