Copernicus

The idea of the sun being the center of the solar system, known as heliocentrism, is found in several Vedic Sanskrit texts written in ancient India (9th–8th century BC); in ancient greece by, Aristarchus of Samos (c. 270 BC); in Hellenistic Babylonia, based on Aristarchus by Seleucus of Seleucia (b. 190 BC); Medieval India, by Aryabhata (476–550); the Islamic world, by Ibn al-Haytham (c. 1000); and finally Renaissance Europe by Copernicus in 1543, which was later elaborated by Kepler and defended by Galileo.

Copernicus, but it was Galileo who took the rap from the Roman Catholic church for promoting the "theory". He faced excommunication and burning at the stake for heresy until he "recanted" and conformed to the Church's dictates.

Some of the traditions of the Church depended on the Earth being the center of the universe, as promoted by Ptolemy and it took a preponderance of scientific evidence to change the religious mindset.

1) Copernicus. He actually got the idea from Aristarchus, however, who lived in Greece long before him. Copernicus is known as the first European scientist to propose it.
