Puck is a fairy in the service of Oberon He gaily admits to being "a shrewed and knavish sprite"
Puck Speaks the epilogue of the play. I quote:
"Puck is a very English fairy, Robin Goodfellow
I am that merry wanderer of the night. I jest to Oberon and make him smile When I a fat and bean-fed horse beguile, Neighing in likeness of a filly foal. And sometimes lurk I in a gossip's bowl, In very likeness of a roasted crab,
And when she drinks, against her lips I bob And on her withered dewlap pour the ale. The wisest aunt, telling the saddest tale, Sometime for three-foot stool mistaketh me, Then I slip from her bum, down topples she, And `tailor' cries, and falls into a cough,
And then the whole quire hold their hips and laugh, And waxen in their mirth, and neeze, and swear A merrier was never wasted there. (n.i)
Yet this homely, colloquial `shrewd and knavish sprite'
who delights in mischief is also a cosmic power, and can
... put a girdle round the earth In forty minutes. (n.i)"

A puck is a being of faerie descent, most common in Greek, English and Celtic mythologies, and may even exist in German lore as well. Puck is also known as Pan, Jack Robinson, Robin Goodfellow, The Great Horned God, and Lord of the Greenwood. In Pagan lore, Puck is not ever seen between Samhain (Halloween) when the God dies and Ostara (Easter) when the God is a growing teen again. As well, when Puck *is* seen, it is always with a group of animal followers who frolick and dance to the pipes he plays. In Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, the character actually named Robin transforms into "Puck".

A mischievous imp of English folklore. Also a moon of Uranus, and I believe a name of a wood farie in Shakespeare's "A mid summer's night's dream."
