Huh?! Limp Bizkit? Metallica?!! How about 30 years earlier? Try Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix for starts. Then add in some Kinks, Beatles, Animals and a few sundry British Invasion bands and then you have a start.

I'd have to go with Led Zeppelin. Led Zep was doing the dark demonic thing before Black Sabbath. Even though a lot of Led Zeps music was main stream, I'd still say they started the genre.

Black Sabbath started the hair thing though.

I watched a show about Ozzy Osbourne and those interviewed(mostly the group itself) said that he and Black Sabbath were the first to come up with the genre. Could be. I always thought it was Led zeppelin, but they were more influenced by British blues artists.

metal was around before sabbath(who i Dearly love) some earlier examples are Jethro Tull and Uriah Heap. locomotion breath, and stealing are both Excellent metal songs. but remember, it's the song itself that matters, not the band that does it. a mellow song is a mellow song no matter who did it. one of the best metal songs I've hears was called "crazy horses" by believe it or not the Osmund's i know, hard to believe, but listen and decide for yourself and get back to me

Despite what The Line thinks, it is a combination of things.
There were quite a few groups back in the early 60's that had the heavy guitar riffs and solos and a strong beat. and a lot of groups that had the singers that could sing like that . i have put a link so you can do your own research on it.

It was actually Ozzy's great great grandpappy "Amadeas Osbourne" who, by chance of dropping a dozen stacked copper pots on a castle floor in Cambridge, first discovered & then coined the term "Heavy Metal"...

Sabbath is a good answer.......but that is more hard rock than metal. I would answer AC/DC......they had more of a metal sound
