The best thing that you can do is to not come up with some wild story. Let them know that you stretched your budget to get the apartment. You should be able to make the payments, but you don't feel real comfortable and that is why you continued to look even after you signed. I hope this is at least close to the truth and that it might help.

If you signed a lease, you are bound by the contract. They have all the rights they need to enforce it to the extent of the contract.

The contract exist to protect your as well as the apartment's interest. All you can do is talk to the management and see if they want to let you out. Remember to be nice. They are under no obligation to let you out of it. You might want to mention (if it is the truth) this is the first time you are on your own to rent a place and you really didn't know what you were doing.

Talk to them and say you are unable to move in due to a sudden change in your personal situation. You may have to pay a penalty....but if your attitude is respectful, you never can tell the results.
