Don't do anything except adjust the heater back to normal. That temperature won't hurt the betta and a slow steady drop is far, far better than trying to lower it quickly. Anything you may try to do to lower the temperature will just stress the fish. Just sit back and allow it to cool on it's own. Your fish really will be just fine.

Well, You shouldn't lower the water temperature too quickly. After all, the betta might learn to adapt to the hot temperature and not be used to the sudden change. Bettas are comfortable with the temperature of 30 degrees Celsius so adjust everything until the temperature is perfect or thereabouts. They can live with colder temperatures too, but not too cold. The heater in the tank is unecessary but okay to be put there if necessary to make life more cmfy for it and any other fish.

Unless the fish looks bad, just put it in another cooler spot to cool down. If you have a big break down add a little amount of ice cubes and remember to unplug the heater. The betta might be ok, but for other occations unless its a catastrophy like dumping poison on your tank you just sit and help it slowy.

Don't worry, as long as your tank doesn't get over 90 your betta will be fine. if you try to lower the water temp yourself you could stress the fish to death.
Just turn your heater to a more comfy 78-82 for your betta and the water will gradually and safely cool down.

Ice cubes in the water???!!Put tank in the fridge!??!!These people are nuts please dont listen to them!!LOL!
Dont worry about the temperature your betta is fine! The ideal temperature for a Betta is 80 degrees but it dont matter if it's a few degrees off.
Usually,if my betta seems sick or depressed [lying around, not moving much] it is good to raise the temperature from 88 to 90 and adding a little aquarium salt!So knwoing this, high temperatures like these will not harm your betta in any way.
Aquarium salt is a good additive for remedies and a great all around disease preventative and stress reducer! It is also good to change about 20% of the water every other day if you have a tank with a filter, which is good!If you dont have filter, you must make more frequent water changes.
I noticed my betta's are usually more active in hotter temperatures,so all in all, dont worry about it!
[P.S.-Why is adding ice cubes/putting the tank in the fridge is harmful in anyway?Because if your betta feel's this sudden temperature change esp. from nearby ice cubes he will stress out and die from shock!!!!!!]

You never want to quickly adjust the temperature for fish. The shock of that could easily kill them. Betta's live in tropical areas (in rice paddies, streams and even puddles) and are used to temperatures that get up to 88 degrees. Just make sure your brother can't change it again, and understands why. Let it cool off on its own (they prefer temps of 75-86 degrees, so don't let it cool off too much!) but not below 75 - that can cause them to become listless. Great site below!

turn the heater down.
And let me say something about Hyper Woman. That is a very professional answer. You are hearing from a girl who has over 200 fish at her house. Her parents are like fish doctors and she knows just about everything about everyfish and every plant. So if you get an answer from her. It is a very good professional answer. She knows what type of medicine and what diesease your fish can have. She knows what to do in such a happening as this. I think you should listen to her more than these idiots who just want a lightbulb, or to show off to others.

You wouldn't have to change all the water. But I would add a little cold to it. Not to much to make it drop to fast but enough to get it started.
