Another couple equations?

Question

First question: In my other question, everyone seemed to know that the =2m-1 Was a negative one, not minus one. How come? I thought you were to subtract 1 from 2m.

Second: I have another equation. (They keep getting harder and harder for me).....Here it is, and what I've got so far. I keep trying, but I never seem to get it right.

6y+3=3y-7+y
6y+3-3=3y-7+y-3
6y=3y-7+y-3
6y=3y-7+y-y-3
6y-y=3y-7-3
6y-y=3y-4

I'm like 99% sure that's not right. I kept going and going until I ran out of crazy things to do with the equation, haha. Please help me better understand these. Each page I do keeps getting worse, and I'm scared that if I keep moving on without knowing how to do it, It'll scar me forever.

When you subtracted 3 from both sides, you should have gotten -10, not -4. -7 minus -3 is -10.

Regardless, you haven't been combining any of the variables. When you get to this:
6y - y = 3y - 10

You can do this:
5y = 3y - 10
5y - 3y = 3y - 10 - 3y
2y = -10
2y/2 = -10/2
y = -5

You're right in that it's not right.

What I see you doing is not being consistent with combining terms. In your third line, you combined on the left side of the equation and not the right. As you continued on, you had more and more stuff on the right which made it very confusing.

Try it this way?

6y + 3=3y - 7 + y
6y + 3=4y - 7
6y + 3 - 3=4y - 7 - 3
6y=4y-10
6y - 4y=4y - 10 -4y
2y=-10
2y/2=-10/2
y=-5

6y +3 = 4y -7 subtract 3 from both sides

6y = 4y -10 subtract 4y from both sides

2y = -10 divide both sides by 2

y = -10/2 y= -5
