I prefer Japanese cars, specifically the hondas and toyotas, nissans as well. But can't afford as much right now. We need a second car for my wife, who is just learning to drive. Doesn't want to drive our MDX, feels it's too large for her. If I had the money, I'd get a new Fit or a Versa - but cash flow is a bit slow right now. So I'm looking used - only looking to spend $10G CAD. To get a used Civic for that price, I'd have to go a bit older than I like. So I'm considering the 2003 or 2004 Suzuki Aerio, 2004 Hyundai Elantra hatchback, or an older (2002?) Echo (hard to find them that old with lower mileage. Any thoughts/suggestions? I'd like to consider the Cobalt, but I have heard bad things about their crash test ratings. As mentioned, my wife would be a new driver, but often with 2 young children, so safety would be important.

I don't know about Canada, but in the US, clean Hondas and Toyotas are as good as gold. I would gladly purchase an older Honda/Toyota over any of the other cars you mentioned.

The Suzukis are absolute crap.

And the Echo- does that look safe for 2 young children lol?

The Elantra is okay, but resale is horrid.

go to consumers report magazine in library to find best bets in used cars. check national highway safety traffic admin for crash ratings. go to autotrader and find your best deal. let wife pick the car. buy two car seats. live happily ever after.
