I already passed my Algebra 1 class this year but I wanted to check if I am right in something. My teacher is the schools basketball coach. He lets the boys basketball players come in and do whatever they want. He always busy and barely explains anything. To top all that off, if I would to say a bad word or skip he would immediately notice and *****. But with this other girls, which always are using their phones, listening to their Ipods saying bad words, he lets them do anything. One of them even charges their phone. To prove how lazy he is, he doesn't put grades in until the last minute. He sometimes makes up grades for assignments not done, such as a quiz that we never took in which he gave me an F.
To worsen matters, I didn't past the math section of the FCAT by 20 points and I think it was his fault cause he didn't teach correctly.
Am I right or wrong? How can I do good in Geometry if I didn't learn anything in Algebra 1?

He sounds horrid. But you passed at least. i'm not entriley sure what the FCAT is (some sort of state standardized test?), but I don't know if it was completely his fault. Up here in mass. we have the MCAS which you really don't need algebra to pass, it's all common sense math. Yeah, I had a bad algebra 1 teacher too, but did all right in geometry because it's kind of different. There are a lot of theorems and stuff to memeorize, and it applies more to shapes than the... theoretical math, I suppose you could call it, of algebra.

Hehehehe... my geometry teacher was just like that. He totally favored people, and they would sit in the front and have their phones out and he wouldn't care. He also spent more time eating (which is weird because he is so skinny ), then he did teaching.
But I passed by studying these simple formulas:
Distance between two points-
Area of a Circle (and segments)-
Circumference of a Circle (and segments)-
Sin, Cos, and Tan-
and A^2+B^2=C^2
(you should be able to find all these in a Geometry book at your local library, and most $20 calculators will do the Sin, Cos, Tan)
If you just study those during the summer (since schools just about out) you will do totally fine and maybe even excel in geometry. Don't let a crappy teacher keep you down (and don't let you do it to yourself either)!

You might be right, but your mastery of English at your age is atrocious, and indicates there may be other reasons you failed the FCAT.
At the same time, it is essential that you always be honest with your parents so that when these things happen you can tell your parents and they will believe you, vs. the teacher.
I am not unaware of teachers who do things like this.
It is important that you not wait until you've failed to report this, or people will think you are just trying to cover your own short-comings.
Next time, speak up before the end of the year.
Good luck to you. No matter how poor an effort you may have made yourself, it doesn't excuse a poor effort by the teacher.

trust me, there are tons of people who have terrible math teachers. you are right. if you can take the algebra refresher course during the summer, then take it, but only if you think you need it. also have your parents call the school, or go talk with some school administrator. math tudors are also a big help, and scince geometry is very hard, you may need one. on the down side, they can be very expensive. always read the textbook because sometimes you can get a lot from what they explain to you. also ask others for help. just try your best. good luck.

I think you should report this to the school administration. Don't you have evaluation of teachers? Because from what you have written, I have a feeling that if this continues (your Math teacher not teaching anything), then your school's Mathematics level will drop.
Also, maybe you should study more by yourself, so that when lessons come, you can ask questions and participate. The teacher will have to teach, because you are putting in effort.

The secret to open your mouth and ask for help. When I was young, I was too proud to ask, and I suffer. I learnt everything my myself in some subjects. And I could not become the best in some areas just because I was too proud to ask my own parents (when they ignored my education)
You should ask your parents, your principal and other teachers in the same school about what you can do. They will help. If the staff in your school fail to help, write to member of parliament for your area about the state of your school. Some one will take on the fight for you.
Normally if you parents know maths, they will help you. I always help my child. If your parents are not good at maths, take the issue with your principal. Getting a tutor is not easy as it costs money. Also you can learn from friends. Often the kids in your class who do well without this teacher will know what to do. Ask one of them if you can join in somehow.

If you are not learning what you should be and the teacher is not very knowledgable about it then you should get one of your parents to get you switched over to another teacher. It is not fair to you to not be getting what you need from the class. The teacher will just have to understand. Don't worry about hurting her feelings think about your education and what is best for you.
