Where did these originate?Which came first and do they stand for anything?Are different designations for different kinds of sites?

.com is for "commercial", .org is for "organization" and .net is for "network". Commercial is the more popular one of coarse, and it usually consists of everything. Organization domains are usually free, just as long as they are for an organization. And network ones are usually for multiple users in different areas, such as an office place in New York and more of them scattered throughout the US, it just allows them to connect and communicate.

Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a limited number of such domains. For example:

gov - Government agencies
edu - Educational institutions
org - Organizations (nonprofit)
mil - Military
com - commercial business
net - Network organizations
ca - Canada
th - Thailand

all three were created in january 1985. .com refers to commerical uses but now a days .com is used for a lot of other types of websites. .org refers to organization. and is used for certain organizations such as government use. .net refers to network and at first they were intended to be used for network oriented entities such as an internet provider.

.com is for the stats and .ca is canada .ca=canada
.net i think is for network and org i am not sure
