Why is it that in this site so many of the postings leave correct spelling much to be desired? At my age (I'm 71), and as an aphasic person in the wake of a tumor in the environs of my brain stem and, during surgery, an unfriendly stroke, I sometimes slip with spelling. But here it's so easy...the doggoned site will check it out for you. And happily so for this old coot with his cane and disfigured ugly mug. So my question is: why the sloppy spelling in this scholarly wing of Yahoo Answers?

I don't remember this as the scholarly type. I think the words THINK TANK come to mind. I'm not intent on disrespecting my elders here, as I am just a hair from being one myself. Since I nOW KNOW THAT MY ELDERS IN MY YOUNGER DAYS WERE NEVER RIGHT BUT YET i find myself give the exact same advice that I was given. HUH???/ In my 1st & 2nd grade classes my teachers would drag me by the arm to the big kid side of the world & challenge anyone to outspell me. In the 5th I represented my school at the national level so I'm almost considered by my ignorant friends as a well-read idiot. I just forget at times that my comp is slow and spell check takes forever when I am on the rampage. I apologize for offending you and will do everything in my power to learn keyboard magic to prvent further inconvenience!!!!! Mysincerest apologies to you!!!!!

Because they are so interested in what they have to say they aren't so interested in how to spell. Yes, they can use spell check but that is too hard for them. Sometimes they can't even do their own homework. We have Google now and apparently eveybody else is supposed to analyze everything for them. I require money for that (among other things, lol). Have a good day and sorry to hear about the stroke.

I completely agree with you. I blame public schools today. Teachers today don't stress the importance of correct spelling and I know this because several of my children's teachers have told me they don't care as long as the point of the assignment is acheived. OK so now as long as my child gets to a point of view that the teacher agrees with it doesn't matter if she looks illiterate because she can't spell. I have decided to teach my children myself that spelling does matter and I enforce the use of a dictionary.

Good grammar and spelling have gone flying out the window in the digital age.

I look at the members of my own generation and I am terrified what will happen once we are in power.
Brains and common sense are in extremely short supply!!!!

Well, because many high school graduates know how to put condom on cucumber, but cannot name the first seven president of the United States.

Accountability, sir.
Hold us accountable, firmly, but respectfully.
Make sure we hold our students accountable, firmly, but respectfully.
I am a teacher. If I am good enough, I will survive.
My reward? Better peers.

Keep speaking up. Don't blame. Hold accountable. Insist.
