It runs fine but when it gets to between 40 and 50 mph, the engine sems to boug down. It wont stall but if you let off the gas and apply it slowley you can keep it at about 35 mph.
it is a straight 6 with a carb.

Check your exhaust to see if the catalytic converter is stopped up. If it is ok check with your dealer to see if this vehicle has a throttle position sensor. If it does, a way to tell if it is bad is to unplug it. The car will take gas the way it should with the sensor unplugged, it will just get horrible mileage. Also check for a vacuum leak as your spark advance works from vacuum and will effect how the engine runs at mid-rpms. These are the most common problems other than carb/fuel injection needing cleaned.

I had a 62 Chevy Impala Super Sport with a 327 that did the same thing. It required timing set, new plugs, and a tune up. in my case the plugs in it were mismatched two were not even firing and one did not even belong in a 327. Hope that helps. Gerald G.

One of the above two answers is right. Replace the fuel filter first, it probably needs it anyway.
