MC Solaar is the rapper I immediately associate with French rap. I remember seeing a video of his years ago and being shocked that it was on an English music video station. I would say that the fact that he is known in English speaking countries is testament to his popularity.

I would cosign on MC Solaar. I do not speak or understand French. Therefore, I cannot tell you how good he is lyrically or what is subject matter is about.
However, I first heard about him on Missy Elliot's 'All N My Grill'. His delivery with words like zigzag zigzag, oui, j'ai du zigzaguer and cling-cling clinquant amused me. That led me to ask a friend of mine, who is from France, if he has ever heard of him. He then told me that he did and he feels that he is a good French rapper and better than some of what is being played on America's radios.
