Most women I know prefer to go to the salon, simply because you will get a better "product" that is done by an expert. Often times, over the counter products are not the highest quality (think about women you see on the street with that horrible orange hair look, complete with dark roots), or you may also need help picking an appropriate color.
Overall, you will pay more, but you will get a better quality look if you have a hairdresser do it.

I color my own hair. It's my form of gambling. I never get the same result twice. I often mess with reds (I have natural red undertones, so I try to work with it). I always keep a backup box of Chestnut Brown, just in case it goes too badly.

I have it colored in the salon about 4 times a year. I do the touch-ups at home.

Hair dressers, and I spend a fortune. When it comes to taking care of my hair, i would never settle for anything other than the best.

Color my own.. It's too expensive to get it professionally colored, and not worth it.
