Okay i am on proportions now. . .ive been a straight A math student till now.

I have all these things and i cant find the answer and i keep getting low scores on it (luckily my teacher is letting me get many chances.)

So can you help me figure out problems LIKE these:

1)If Bob buys seven pounds of candy for $3.43, which proportion can be used to calculate the cost of each pound of candy?

2)One of the questions on Judy's homework states
'Find two consecutive integers whose sum is 15.'

Which equation represents this problem?

3)What is the solution set of two consecutive even integers whose sum is 26.

4)One of the questions on Jo's homework states
'Find two consecutive integers whose sum is -7.'

Which of the following statements are true about the solution?

5)If you add 8 to Susan's age, the sum is 24. Solving which equation for A would determine Susan's age? A represents Susan's age

These are the 5 problems that give me problems.

The first one is about proportions, the others are integer problems.
Generally when solving a word problem use letters that stand for what you're looking for, not just x and y.
To solve a proportion, set up the like quantites on the same level, then multiply or divide So the first one will go like this:
price / weight = price / weight That is
3.43 / 7 = p / 1 where p = price of 1 lb.
Divide 3.43 by 7 and find out that the price per pound is .49
For the others, you'll have to translate the words into math. For info on how to do this see...
http://www.purplemath.com/modules/translat.htm
So to do the next one, you need to know that consecutive integers are related like this: n is the first one, n+1 is the second one, n+2 is the third one, and so on. For rnore info on how to do integer problems see..
http://www.purplemath.com/modules/numbprob.htm
So this one translates as n + (n+1) = 15
Now combine like terms and use inverse operations to get the n by itself and the answer on the other side. Put the n's together...
2n + 1 = 15 subtract 1 (inverse operation to +1)
2n = 14 (inverse operation to multiply by 2)
n = 7 the answer, or one of them. The other one is the next integer, which is 8. To check, note that 7 + 8 = 15

1)7 pounds= 3.43
1 pound= x(?)
that above is the proportion
you cross multiply, and get:
3.43*1=7x
3.43=7x
x=.49: each pound costs 49 cents

2) let us say that one integer is a, and the other is b. Thus, the sum of the 2 #=a+b, and 15

ans: a+b=15 or a+a+1=15 or 2a+1=15

3)if a is one consecutive even integer(2,4,6), then the next consecutive even integer will be a+2(2+2=4, 4+2=6).

sum = 26,

a+a+2=26
2a+2=26
2a=24
a=12

4) a=one integer(3,4,5), and a+1=next integer

a+a+1=-7
2a+1=-7
2a=-8
a=-4, a+1=-3

true statements: 2a+1=-7, a and b are negative, etc...

5) A= susan's age

A+8=24:ans

1) You would divide $3.43 by 7
2) Two consectutive integers or two consectutive odd integers? The only think that I can think of is 1 and 15 and 3 and 5, but the 3 and 5 are consectutive odd integers.
3) 12 and 14
4) -3 and -4
5)Take 8 from 24 = A

Remember sum is addidtion so you do the opposite.

proportions. hmmm... your first problem can set up as something per something else. so...
$ per lbs candy
$3.43/7bls set this equal to how many dollars per 1lbs?
$3.43/7lbs =$x/1lbs

2) 2 consecutive integers = 15
if x and y represent two consecutive integers
than y = x+1
from the problem, we can deduce that
x+y=15 then plug in our value for y
x+(x+1)=15
2x+1=15

work the answer for problem 4 and 5 in the same way, just use a different formula. i'll be happy to help if you need more assistance, but give it a try for your self first. good luck!

The secret of math is to study the textbook examples and to do the homework at the end of the sections.The more you do a certain concept in math the more you will understand it.A good textbook will then apply it to everyday life in a problem. When you apply yourself in the study department, you will be surprised at how much you understand. I am 53 years old and have been away from school for a long time and am taking a college algebra class where I have an A average. You have to focus!!!
