Ok so I needed to get some home repairs done on my new house (old house but had it less than 6months) It first started with bats flying into my house through the chimeny so the bat catcher gave me a number to a chimeny repairman because it needed to be tuckpointed. After several no shows and misses on both parts we finally got in together and he bid $550 to fix the chimeny, new cage on top, and fix the hole in my ceiling (ac story). Well the morning that he was suppose to come out and fix my ceiling he called and said he had an emergancy at another home and since I would be at work just leave the deposit in the mail box and he would work on the chimney on the outside while I was gone. He was suppose to leave an invoice in the mailbox. When i got home from work the check was gone, no invoice, and it didn't seem like any work had been done. Suppose to come out the next day but never showed. Haven't been able to get ahold of him and he won't return my phone calls. what do I do?

You can report him to the Better Business Bureau, and make a complaint to the economic growth department in your state. They will help you by contacting him and setting up a mediation between you. They also can take his license away from him. He will finish the job if you contact them. I have went through them before and they are of great help. Good Luck!!!!!

I can see about five or six mistakes here. One, you never met the guy, two you left him money without a contract, three you left him money without a receipt, four, you never saw the work done, five, you don't even know for sure where he lives. I don't even want to go on.
I don't know what the amount was for but, I would report it to the sheriffs office as a scam, then accept the loss. Let them handle it, they'll either find the guy, he's probably done that before. Or, he's gone.
Find that "bat catcher" and see what the heck he says about it all. Make sure the sheriff has his name and tell him you gave his name to the sheriff.

The next time there an old saying "let the buyer beware" follow it.

Okay. So the fist thing you need to do is that you must figure out who it is, whether that means backtracking his number or if you already have is business name or the person you are doing business with. Depending on the state you're in, the statute of frauds may require you to have the contract in writing because the contract worth is over 500 dollars. You can take this person to small claims court. I recommend you to google small claims court to find out more. You will have to "serve" the person you are suing first. Your local court will have appropriate actions to "serve" the person properly. Hope this works out alright.
