Ok, I am thinking about trying out for football this year. I am playing baseball, but I wanted to do something more. I am around 5'8" and about 155 lbs. I have nice muscles and a lilttle bit of belly fat. I am pretty bad at throwing and catching, but most people say I am good at tackeling and blocking. I am in 7th grade, age 13, I will probilly be playing with guys 13-15/16. Not that fast for short distance, but I ran a 7 minute mile. So, my question is, what position should I play and if there is more than one, could you list pros and cons. Thank's all answers appreciated.

at your age you could be a good Tight end if your telling the truth, you could only be in on running plays as a blocker since your bad at catching, although you can always get better.
Defensive end would also be good spot and line backer, you need to be explosive, and have a few extra pounds on you, aggressiveness beats all qualities, ask your coach, he will give you the best answer to your question

My thoughts:
Tight End:
Pros:
TE's do a lot of blocking, and maybe some catching. Your weight might help you out there too.
Cons:
At 5'8", you might be a bit short for a TE.
Halfback:
Pros:
Again, blocking is key here. You don't need a lot of speed, you just have to like hitting guys.
Cons:
You might be called on to run a little and you said your speed isn't great. Might also be a bit small. You usually want to be bigger than your RB.
Safety:
Pros:
You don't need great speed, just an awareness of where the ball is and the ability to sense where the play is going. You also have to like hitting people.
Cons:
Your speed might hold you back a little, but you can always develop quickness.
Linebacker:
See Safety.
I hope that gives you some direction. Do your best and have fun.

I will limit my answer to the interior offense line. Look at the college game for the example of the programs that do not draw the best talent year and year out. A good betting strategy would be to bet on the the major college teams with five fifth year seniors in O-line. Don't just look at the W-L record. Look at the quality of losses if the team is an middle level team in a strong conference like Big Ten or SEC. I do not read those football magazines to form an opinion. Ask someone who has played major college football. Not a sport writer.

Fullback
pro- not alot of people want to play that position, so if your decent the coach will give you a chance to prove yourself, cause I doubt anyone else will try out for the position. Occasionally you might get a chance to carry the ball. Good fullbacks are counted on to score in really close range 1-2 yards, see Mike Ahlstot, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, not sure about spelling of his last name though. Also the chicks dig a guy who scores on the football field. Also my favorite fullback of all time was Tom Rathman, University Of Nebraska, lifetime 49er.
Con- you have to memorize the playbook, and you will probably be trying to block lineman, and blitzing corner backs and safeties, so you might get lit up occasionally

why are you guys saying tight end, he just said " i am pretty BAD at throwing and CATCHING"!!! tight ends catch too dummies!! honestly, you should try to be an offensive lineman or defensive lineman
offensive lineman
PROS:1. you say you can block good, lineman block
2.youre short, which means you could get under youre man and have an advantage on him
3. you say you have nice muscles, you have to out muscle youre defender
4. you dont have to be that fast to play on the o-line
CONS:1. 155 pounds seems light to me, so i dont know how effective youll be
2. blocking sucks, and you dont get none of the recognition, the quarterback and runningback do.
example: if the running back gets tackled for a loss, its your fault, but if he busts open for a 30 yard gain, its because hes so good.
defensive lineman
PROS:1. again, your short and can get under your man
2. you get to make tackles, and you say you can tackle good
3. you dont have to be as big to be effective
CONS: 1. you say youre not that fast, and you have to be pretty quick on defense
2. you get tired more easily on defense than you do on offense

well if your a good tackler maybe you should try line backer and also mile times don't matter you should time a 40 and see what you get also your going to need to work on your abs cause belly fat is no good in less your on the line and for you to be on the line you going to need to gain a lot more weight, and your coach should help you with everything else so just go into practice willing and ready to try your best

You have excellent size for a blocking tight end, and if your catching progresses you could become almost an every down tight end. Also, I think you might excel at cornerback, safety, or linebacker.

You might be okay at offensive guard, defensive linebacker or tight end/fullback. Run through drills with the coaches and find out where they can fit you. And don't give up.
