Wondering what type of reasonably priced ethernet card would be the most powerful to pick up signals and if there is even a difference in the new ethernet cards as opposed to the one i bought with my laptop 5-6 yrs ago?

It depends what you are asking.
Are you talking the ability to receive remote signals or are you talking speed .
For power look at the smc elite
The key thing is that an external antenna can be added .
You may want to get a card that has an external antenna ability and then add a cantenna or somehting.
If your antenna is built into the lid of the laptop you won't do much better than that
The pcmcia laptop cards by themselves are limited with their small antennas - it is the external antenna that counts.
Also as a scanning software the windows program is more than limited - get netstumbler

The card I am going to recommend is a b card.
Now you are probably going to say - an old card
The speed drops down greatly with any distance.
With the distances you are speaking 1 mb/s would be exceptional.
Cards generally go at half the rated speeds right by the router these speeds are imaginary.
As well I do not know about the new n or pre n cards. I know with the router they go far - what about standard g or b , Do not know. But they are pricey

Here is a cantenna

But remember networking connectors are a confusing expensive item. Many look the same but are not:
And the signal drops with any length

These are favorites with off the shelf components

portability and visibility ( from the authorities ) may be an issue
very powerful and easy to use
basically a 12 inch metal bowl , a generic zyadas usb network adapter. With a 12 inch bowl the antenna of the adapter sits 7 inches of the base. Very low tech but powerful and very easy to use with standard usb extension cords
Use the adapter that comes with the adapter even with xp.
XP reads it wrong. Signal strength is low but the signal bounce back quality is off the scale

These are the highest power but not easy to carry around

Well Senao, Genisus have some wireless cards that are 250mw thats 10 times linksys or dlink. They also have external antennas available for them. Makes them work much better..

What you are really asking is what is the most powerful WIFI card... ethernet is for wired circuits.
