Or can i just buy one from menards or home depot and do it my self. It sucks cooking without the fan to get rid of the smoke

You don't say what's wrong with it. Replace it if it looks bad, otherwise if the light works, just replace either the fan motor or the switch, whichever is bad. They are fairly cheap to replace.

If you chose to replace it, shut it off at the breaker. there will be a cover over the electrical connections by the switches. Unhook the wiring, then there will be 4 screws holding it up to your cabinets that you need to remove. If it's a vent-less model, just remove the range hood and replace with a new one. If it is a vented model, lower the range hood until you have access to the vent. Remove the vent then replace it with the new one. Make sure you buy the same type that your replacing (vented or vent less). Shouldn't take you over a couple of hours at most.

Without all the explanations: You can replace it yourself if that's what you want to do. Make sure everything is unplug ed, all the plug-ins. You'll need help with the bulkiness. There's usually four screws that hold it in, I have found two when carpenters are in a hurry, sorry jobs. Take the old one out, reverse the procedure to put the new one in.
