It depends on the last time you updated. If there is nothing to update, it won't ask for a key. If you haven't in a while, you better dig out your box.
And, by the way, if you "lost" your product key you can find one online with a bit of googling. ;)

I've never had an update ask for my game's serial number. For the Sims games, both 1 and 2, you only use the serial numbers when you install the games. Once they are installed, you won't need them again until you unintall the games, then reinstall again in the future.
If you lost your serial numbers, they are easy to retrieve. If you registered your game with EA Games, you can simply go to the EA Games website, log in with whatever log in you used for your games registration, then go to your account. It will tell you every EA Game you have registered until that name, including your sims games.
