There is a lyric towards the end of the song:

Sounds like he's dead to me.

Ziggy Stardust was a character in the 1972 rock concept album by David Bowie. He wasn't a real person.
And besides the name "Stardust" and that he was a fictional character from Mars, he had nothing to do with the science in Astronomy and Space.

In late 1972/early 1973, Mr Stardust had a "mental breakdown" of sorts, and the other members of the Spiders had him committed to the Hampstead Heath hotel (actually a sanitorium), where he remains to this day.
